The stylohyoid bone is a long slender bone that runs from the roof of the guttural pouch down to the base of the tongue where it joins with the same bone from the other side through a series of connections with smaller bones. The plica salpingopharyngea can sometimes act as a one way valve trapping air in the pouch causing guttural pouch tympany. It is an extension of the eustachian tube which is an air filled canal that connects the throat to the middle ear.
